"The cinema stands on the border between the material and the image, the lifeless and the living1." Motionless objects become mobile thanks to frame by frame, used in Europe for the first time in 1907 by Segundo de Chomón in The Electric Hotel. In this programme proposed by the CNC, we find Chomón's unique film, Modern Sculptor (1908), combining magic tricks and animated sequences where objects suddenly come to life.
This eclectic programme traverses seventy years of hexagonal production and showcases remarkable filmmakers who are sometimes forgotten. A great occasion to discover Bicard and Agent Balloche in L'Affaire de la rue Lepic (1922), the farce directed by Raymond Galoyer and André Yvetot, to appreciate the work of the loyal assistant of Ladislas Starewitch, Bogdan Zoubowitch, in Story Without Words (1934), to revisit Renaissance by Walerian Borowczyk (1963), and to explore Sophie et les gammes by Julien Pappé (1964).
We will pay tribute to the Bettiol brothers in their adaptation of Samuel Beckett's, Act Without Words (1965), and we'll let ourselves get caught up in the exceptional free and contemporary version of Blue Beard (1978) by Olivier Gillon, set to music by Georges Delerue.
