The animated cartoon was a French invention. Paul Grimault was a pioneer in this art and made a lasting impact on the French animated feature with The King and the Mockingird. His principal disciples (who have also made names for themselves) Jean-François Laguionie and Jacques Colombat contributed to this documentary.

Other successful feature filmmakers renowned for their particular style, including Sylvain Chomet (director of The Illusionist), Jacques-Rémy Girerd (founder of Folimage) and Marjane Satrapi (author/director of Persepolis) were interviewed for this film by Romain Delerps and Alexandre Hilaire (director).
