Tribute to Japanese Animation: Anime Tamago
Created in 2010 by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Young Animator Training Project, also known as Anime Tamago, is a program that provides support to young Japanese animators during their studies. It also serves to identify and develop future talent. During this professional program, student-directors are thrown immediately into the deep end, learning as they create through this unique form of on-the-job training. The short films they make, an incredible concentration of raw creativity, offers a glimpse into Japanese animation excellence to come.
"If I had to name one country with a true culture of animation, it would definitely be Japan." A seemingly obvious declaration made by French director Georges Lacroix in 1999, the year when the Annecy Festival celebrated Japanese animation for the very first time. Twenty years later the Festival pays homage to this truly singular cinematographic style through both a retrospective and a look to the future to reveal several hidden gems still relatively unknown in the West.
