For over 20 years, imagespassages has been presenting international artists’ works that use animation at Annecy. This year, for the Festival’s anniversary and its tribute to Africa, the association is showing the exhibition Shadow or Reflection at the Sellerie du haras d'Annecy.
This exhibition of contemporary art and moving images is anchored in our current times by its main thoughts and interrogations about various themes such as orality, storytelling, memory, imagination, movement and displacement. The common thread throughout this Africa2020 Season. The exhibition combines diverse artists’ works, differentiated by their approach as much as by their "origin" and their generation. Africa is the focal point of all their exhibits. The following three multimedia artists will be exhibited in a loop:
This shadow theatre retells the legend of Platon’s allegory of the cave by presenting a procession of miners, symbolising the exodus of populations in different periods in History, and set to Alfred Makgalemele’s music. The work is made available by the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon.
About the artist: William Kentridge was born in 1955 in Johannesbourg, South Africa, we he lives and works. He is one of contemporary art’s leading figures.
This work uses digital animation and stop-motion to communicate about displacement in time and space, from a here and an elsewhere, of immigration, from Ethiopia to New York.
About the artist: Ezra Wube as born in 1980 in Addis-Abeba, Ethiopia and currently lives in New York. His works have been screened or installed at major events and museums worldwide. He also created the Addis Video Art Festival.
This interactive installation exhibits drawings of African women that the visitor triggers when walking into the exhibition space, in so doing, creating a journey through these women’s bodies, attitudes and faces. This work was presented at the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement at the MAMCO in Geneva.
