Explore the hidden treasures of Mexican animation in this historical retrospective!

In a tribute to Mexico, José Iñesta has teamed up with seven renowned Mexican animation professionals: Sofía Carrillo, Ana Cruz, Lucía Cavalchini, Tania de León Young, Lourdes Villagómez, Christian Bermejo and Jordi Iñesta. Together, they have carefully concocted nine programmes comprising 88 short films, offering Annecy festivalgoers an enthralling plunge into the richness of this multifaceted culture.

Working in collaboration with the Filmoteca UNAM, this program presents a historical retrospective of Mexican animation films produced between 1935 and 1982. During this period, the production was non-constant and heterogeneous, with works that addressed political and cultural topics.

The program aims to feature experimental and historical works that reflect diversity, including notable milestones in Mexican animation history, such as the first documented short film made by a woman and the first computer-created animation. The audience is invited to gain insight into the ways Mexican animators sought to explore the possibilities of the medium.
