For Michaël Dudok de Wit’s feature film debut, Isao Takahata was the artistic director on The Red Turtle, which is opening Annecy 2016.
Last year, Michaël Dudok de Wit presented The Red Turtle as a Work in Progress, and now he’s ready to share the finished version as the Annecy Festival opener. The film is the first venture into feature direction for this Dutch filmmaker who is renowned for his shorts The Monk and the Fish and Father and Daughter.
It’s no secret that die-hard animation fans will easily recognize the Ghibli touch, as the art direction was carried out by none other than Isao Takahata, director of the much loved Grave of the Fireflies.
The Red Turtle tells the story of a castaway who ends up befriending a giant turtle on a deserted island where the only other living beings are birds, turtles and crabs.
Come and lose yourself in this dialogue-less film that follows a man’s major life stages and help us kick off Annecy 2016!
