Korean Animation in the 21st Century 2

  1. Overview
  2. Description
  3. Films

As part of the Year France-Korea, a special programme is dedicated to the evolution of Korean animation production.

In 2004 South Korea was the guest country in Annecy, and so in 2016, for the Year France-Korea, the Festival is taking stock of recent animation that’s come out of this culturally rich and diverse country.

Over the past 15 years, female filmmakers with strong artistic temperaments have arrived on the scene (Sae-byul Hwangbo, Yu-mi Joung, Dahee Jeong, etc.), talented young animators have popped out of Korean animation schools (Hye-won Kim from the University of Hongik in Sejong, Yong-hae Ahn from the KAFA – Korean Academy of Films Arts) and ambitious filmmakers have ventured into the world of features (Sang-ho Yeon with Seoul Station; Sung-gang Lee with My Beautiful Girl, Mari; Baek-yeop Sung with Oseam).

The short films that make up this two-part programme demonstrate the rise of these new creatives, their stimulating exploration of forms and fine technical artistry. So, get ready to take some fresh and inspiring Korean animation.
