In 1894, in Paris, France, a trafficked 13-year-old girl from Java escapes her life as a maid and model for the painter Paul Gauguin. Seeking money to get back to her family, she disguises herself as a boy and finds work with the other misfits at the famous Circus Fernando. This film is the story about a young girl's journey to find freedom and return home.
